A couple of years ago, during the winter season, I was doing my usual grocery shopping at Whole Foods, I realized many people buying elderberry syrup or drops. When I looked at the ingredients I decided to give it a try thus, the creation of this began.

So instead of buying elderberry syrup, I make my own and it has helped us throughout the season.

Turmeric

Ingredients

  •  1 tablespoon fresh turmeric root peeled and grated
  • 2  tablespoon fresh ginger root peeled and grated
  • 1 cup elderberry seeds
  • 2 cloves
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 2-inch cinnamon stick
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup honey**

Directions

  • Add all ingredients except the honey in a cast iron pot and bring to a slow boil with the cover on for 35- 40 minutes.
  • Remove the cover, the liquid should be about half the amount you started with.
  • Remove bay leaf and cinnamon stick.
  • Remove from heat and let cool for about 20 minutes. The liquid must be completely cool.
  • Strain liquid using a cheesecloth.
  • Pour into a mason jar.
  • Add honey to the liquid, and you have made yourself elderberry syrup.
  • Keep refrigerated

Note: I use all organic items.

**Make sure you are using a good, quality honey. I get my honey at our local farmers’ market.

  1. This worked wonders for me Dee! My throat felt tight and in the night I would breath hard. I took this as suggested and in less than three days, I was back to normal! You’re a gem!
